Our Inspiration

Re/lax Remade hats are lovingly inspired by the quintessentially Australian terry towelling chemist-bought hats Karina’s dad and grandpa lived in during the 70s and 80s. Despite their humble origin, Karina wanted to elevate the hats into something more artisanal, with a real emphasis on unique materials, craftsmanship and creating a modern heirloom.

“The designer is compelled by how the transformation of preloved textiles can reframe what we see. “I feel a bit like I’m rescuing this material from obscurity, and I’m so motivated by this; so much of value exists already,” she says of the hats, handmade by a small team in Sydney. Sometimes the value is obvious – made from towels by Saint Laurent, Hermes and Chanel – but otherwise she revives 70s towels into elevated versions of her initial inspiration: her dad’s pharmacy-bought terry towelling hat.”- Alice Birrell, Vogue

Material-led Design.

We believe that enough of value and beauty exists in the world already. We don’t need new materials, just new ideas. The Re/lax Remade brand elevates the beauty of forgotten domestic textiles, honouring the designs, and transforming them into something even more beautiful and meaningful, extending their story and prolonging their life.

Made With Dignity.

There is an ethical responsibility inherent in all design, and in creating her brand, Karina wanted to address not just the issues of overproduction and waste, but the treatment of people in the name of fashion. At Re/lax Remade, our small team of nine are each encouraged to bring their individuality to work and are nurtured and encouraged to use their unique gifts for purpose. Treating people well in a safe, fun and inspiring environment – this is the most fashionable thing of all!
